IDW’s Godzilla: Rulers of Earth

The confusing chronology of IDW’s ongoing Godzilla comics series continues with Godzilla: Rulers of Earth starting this June after their epithet-less Godzilla comic wraps at issue 13. It will carry on the continuity established by Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters, so the first issue of this comic would be the 26th of the overall IDW version of the Toho universe.

The renumbering looks to be more than a marketing ploy, however (though #1s have sold the best for each series), as this will have a new storyline and new creative team. Writing duties will go to Chris Mowry, who wrote the fourth issue of IDW’s Godzilla Legends (featuring Hedorah). He’s got a thankless task in dealing with the universe that Eric Powell muddled pretty badly (compared to the continuity-less freedom of Godzilla Legends), and I look forward to seeing if he can do as well as Duane Swierczynski has been. The more exciting news is that Matt Frank will be taking over interior art, as I’m not fond of Simon Gane’s work on the current series, while Frank’s work on Godzilla Legends #1 and the Kaijuland comic looked great. Hopefully Frank isn’t spreading himself too thin between this ongoing and Kaiju Combat illustrations!

Overall, it’s hard to get as jazzed for the continuation of this version of Godzilla (once bitten and all) as it has been for IDW’s stellar limited Godzilla series runs (if only Godzilla Legends could have been the ongoing one…), but here’s hoping that this new team can smooth over most of its predecessors’ unfortunate peccadilloes and deliver something truly great.
