Today’s Random Tokusatsu: Specter (2005)

Today’s selection: Specter (2005, dir. Junya Okabe)

Subgenre: Henshin Hero

Available from: fansub-only

Specter is a collaboration between Konami and Buildup Co.,who also did Dark Soldier D, Akiba Chan, and some effects for Godzilla vs King Ghidorah, Ultra Galaxy, Stray Dogs, etc. The story’s about a government agent who polices alien invaders, and is a decent little self-contained story with some tounge-in-cheek moments. It’s a direct-to-video film, so the CGI is not fantastic, but the action is consistent enough for its shorter run-time. It would be neat if it got some sort of official English-language release, but I’m not sure if there’s much of a market for its short run-time and DTV budget, unfortunately (I’m not sure if the Japanese DVD had any subtitles; all I found in searching were dodgy Malay releases).
