Today’s selection: The Princess Blade (2001, dir. Shinsuke Sato)
Subgenre: Martial arts
Available from: Discotek
ADV had cinema distribution once upon a time, so movies like Gamera: Guardian of the Universe and The Princess Blade actually got wide-release theatrical play in the US, much to the delight of a 90’s kid such as myself. Today’s movie is sort of a sci-fi version of Kazuo Koike’s Lady Snowblood, though the futuristic setting only really serves to account for why everybody seems to be wearing such stylish outfits instead of 1800’s attire. The story is about a kick-ass assassin (Yumiko Shaku), who has a revelation and deserts her assassin clan, to the ire of her assassin boss (Kyusaku Shimada), leading to sword fights choreographed by Donnie Yen set to Kenji Kawai music. Outside of the wirework, the movie is sort of light on special effects, but there are a number of CGI city shots (establishing that this is the future!), so I figure that it qualifies for today’s selection.
