Today’s Random Tokusatsu: Isola (2000)

Today’s selection: Isola (2000, dir. Toshiyuki Mizutani)

Subgenre: ESPer

Available from: Adness

Isola is based on the first novel from Yusuke Kishi, who also wrote the base story for the recent anime From the New World. It’s a mid-range psychological horror piece, about a telepathic psychologist who’s trying to help a girl with 13 alternate personalities, one of whom is an evil spirit. There’s mentions of ghosts, out-of-body experiences, mind control, and some other paranormal stuff. Effects-wise, some gory kills, a little demon-face makeup, and some set work to recreate the aftermath of the great Hanshin earthquake. (I realize I must watch a lot of Japanese cinema when I can summarize a movie like that and it doesn’t even strike me as unusual…)
