Ask an average Japanese person to name an iconic anime or manga character, and you most likely won’t hear Voltron, Speed Racer, or Spike Spiegel. You more than likely will hear Doraemon, Fujiko Fujio’s famous blue cat robot who’s been an icon of Japanese children’s entertainment since 1969. The character has been referenced in everything from GTO to Detective Conan to commercials starring Jean Reno, yet there’s been no official translations into English… until now. It’s coming to the amazon kindle this fall, courtesy of AltJapan, making for yet another piece of the Japanese popular zeitgeist available without having to rely on tertiary references and parodies. Keep in mind that this is an older comic for very young children, and approach it with a similar mindset as, say, a classic Hanna Barbera cartoon.
