Today’s selection: Attack of the Super Monsters (1982, dir. Toru Sotoyama, Tom Wyner)
Available from: Televista
This is one of those US-made compilation movies, in this case combining four episodes of the 1977 Tsuburaya series Dinosaur War Aizenborg. The original show took on quite a challenge for itself: parts with human characters, which would be easier to film in live-action, were animated, while the complicated spectacle of monsters destroying cities and battling with various super weapons was done in live action. The result is a toku/anime hybrid of anime humans piloting live-action robots through miniature city sets, battling suitmation hyper-intelligent dinosaurs from the earth’s core.
As is typical for these sorts of haphazard compilations, the dubbing is bad and the pacing is worse, but there’s really no English alternative for viewing Aizenborg. The monster action keeps things entertaining, though, and this is easily more viewable than say, the Mighty Jack compilation movie. If you watch this and are still hungry for more, Born Free had a similar compilation, titled Return of the Dinosaurs, which is only on VHS as far as I can tell.
