Today’s selection: Ten Nights of Dreams (dirs. Akio Jissoji, Kon Ichikawa, Takashi Shimizu, Yudai Yamaguchi, Yoshitaka Amano, et. al.)
Available from: Cinema Epoch
Based on the book by Natsume Soseki, this film unites an amazing collection of 11 directors, ranging from relative unknowns to superstars, to tackle the ten short stories and framing device. While style ranges wildly from segment, but there is always a clear voice of some kind, making the artsy phantasmagoria of the whole picture stand as the overall impression. Since the movie was made nearly a century after the book, the story set in the far future is a bit ironic, but setting a story in the age of gods is never simple, right? Personally, my favorite segment is from Yoshitaka Amano, but Yudai Yamaguchi’s story also leaves the film on a higher note than I would have expected.
